From the first day of May to the first day of October, a person may not operate a vehicle with tires having metal studs, wires, spikes or other metal protruding from the tire tread.

Citing a lack of adequate public notification, the Chief of the Maine State Police has suspended a new regulation concerning studded snow tires.

The rule, which was supposed to go into effect immediately, required front-wheel drive vehicles to have studded tires on all four wheels, not just the front.

The new regulation will now go into effect next fall-presumably with more public notice.
