I too was pleased and surprised to find the Canton, ME website. My mother, Clara (Waite) Hatch, was born in Canton Point in 1928 and soon after moved to Canton where she attended Canton elementary school. Her parents Marcia (Welch) and Nathan Waite also had another daughter Arlene and two sons Lawrence and George. My mother is now elderly and we have brought her back to Canton and to Lake "Anasigunticook" many time over the past 15 years. Her aunt, Marian (Welch) Ashe who still lives in Bath sent us a clipping sometime back about Canton and plans for re-working town land. I presently live in Connecticut, getting ready to retire and hope to buy land on a lake and build in your area. Anyone selling land on the lake? I would be interested in hearing about it.

I stumbled onto this website and think it is a great idea to keep people from the area in touch with each other! I have read some of the postings and recognize a few of the names! I lived in Canton all of my child hood years and since then have gotten married to a wonderful man who is serving in the ARMY and I have 3 wonderful children in my life! A 6-year old daughter (step), a 5-year old son (step) and an 11 month old son! Hope to read posts from more people in the area! My maiden name is Tracy by the way :-)

My parents vacationed at Pinewood Camps in the mid 50s and it is the source of my middle name. Unfortunatly, the Camps were in the twilight of their existance by the time I first visited in 1966. I was able to spend a few memorable times there in the 70s. Then, in 1981 I stopped at the lodge to see about booking a future stay and was crushed to see that the magnificent pines had been logged, and the camp was thoroughly overgrown. Another stop in 2001 found the lodge and cabins gone. Still, though, I have some fond memories, and a name, of a wonderful place. By the way, my wife has done a very nice watercolor from a photo of the Pinewood Camp lodge, even though she has never been there. Perhaps I can find a way to post it on the site?

Amazing! A Web site for Canton! I spent 7 summers in Canton, first vacationing there and then working at Green Acres Camps ('65 and '66) and then Pinewood Camps ('67). I still have great memories of the town and a lot of the people I met there (the Rays and McFarlands, Adleys, DeMers,etc.) Much has changed over the years, but it's still a great little place on the shore of Lake Anasaguntacook. I did hear recently that part or all of the Pinewood Camps property might be for sale. If so, could someone drop me an E-mail. Thanks. Keep up the good work on the Web site!

Hi, this is an interesting web site. I spent 14 years of my life in Livermore village just down the road on rt 108. I can remember playing baseball near the corn shop. Canton has remained the small town so cherished by members of my generation. After much review, I think it would be a nice place to retire to in a couple of years, I guess I will have to start looking at the real estate ads. If anyone has a lead on a home for sale, let me know. Once again, wonderful website.

I am looking at property in and around Canton but need to know the really important things like is there shopping nearby (:>)? I lived outside of Bangor but don't want to go that far again but I HATE it here in Florida. Tooo buggy and no soil to plant in (:>(. I miss Lilacs and Maple trees and all the good things Maine has to offer, like Community. So, can anyone tell me anything about the Canton area?? I spent summers in the 50's and 60's at Pinewood camps either vacationing with my parents then later returned to work several summers at same camps. Canton was a busy place when the camps were going. I would be interested in seeing any of the old literature about the camps and perhaps someone could direct me to a local person or historical society. I am once again updating and asking for any help anyone can offer me, I was brought up in the 50's & 60's thru foster care and have found all but one brother and one sister, the sister I know is in Florida (I have finally Found Her!) The brother was adopted out, he was born in 1953 his birth name was Clinton Nickerson, He was Born in Portland, Maine. (Have since last posting on this page found a possible name of Clinton Field) with a birth date of 19 Sept. 1953. who could be a possible match by name. I have never seen him due us being separated when approximately 9 months old. My searches have led me to beleive he was possibly raised in CANTON or CLINTON, MAINE by a young couple.(Unknown name) I also beleive his last name was probably changed when adopted. If anyone thinks they may know my brother PLEASE e-mail me back. After his retirement in the 40s from the paper mill, he and his second wife Jessie settled in Canton. After retirement he worked at the Market (Ralph's Cash Market). Born in 1880 in North New Portland, he died from failing health in 1971 in Rumford. Also, my aunt Cora (Knowles) Estes worked at the drug store (Variety store). In 1991 while in Maine I stopped by Canton and visited the home where he lived. As said, I have many fine memories of Canton... The lake, the trains coming through at night, and fishing with grampa... In my 50s now, my wife and I have a 10 year old son who will never know the peacefulness of those days gone by. Comments: WOW Canton has a Webpage! Spent every summer of my youth in Canton on "the Island" built by my Grandfather Charles A. Ray. Best childhood memories are there. Howdy Folks.

I enjoy visiting family up in Canton and hope the community doesn't get in a "growth" mood that destroys its character. I thoroughly ejoyed reading the town history and hope to visit again in the summer when I can wander through some of the sites and maybe bring some relics back to life with my metal detector. Are there any metal detecting hobbyists in the community? Depending on what can be found, I'd like to donate some of the memorabilia (buttons, tokens...etc) to the Historical society if they're interested. The Bethel Historian allowed me to search his private property and we found some intriguing "stuff" Anyway...nice web site, glad to see the town is getting along. see you when school is over! Comments: I used to live in Canton 37 years ago. My dad was the local state trooper, Everett Sands, my mon is Jackie. We moved away when I was 6. I remember friends named Debbie Wallace, Donnie Adams, Herby Harding and Dougie Marsters. The Pearson family bought our house. My mom was very good friends with Frank and Gwen Campbell, Jean and Earl Carlton, Vic and Freda Davis and many others in town. I would love to hear from anyone that night remember us. Mom is living in Dexter and dad passed away in 1975 when we lived in Massachusetts. I visited a few years ago and attended a birthday party for Adelaide Ray. Would love to hear from all of you. Pam

My grandmother, Eva Merrill Stowell Hodge, lived in Canton for many years. I probably still have half-uncles, half aunts and such as my father had 3 half-brothers, Jim, Merle and ? Hodge and 1(?) half-sister, Fern.
